This was a pit dug during the second world war by Italian Prisoner of war and
non conformists, the idea was this Marl (Marl is another term of clay
(Speeton Clay )
was dug up and spread on the sand
land thus preventing it from blowing away in the wind. This left a large clay
hole which holds water for most years.
The area has been planted with willows and by natural regeneration quick thorn
ash and elder berry bushes are all mature, this is a little haven for all types
of wildlife birds, small animals, insects and flowers. It is envisaged this will
be improved during the winter the pond will be enlarged the whole area
reclaimed by the removal of brash vegatation such as brambles and elderberry
bushes. Form the photo above the area at the bottom of the photo is all brambles
and will have to be removed. This will be funded by the Countryside Stewardship
Scheme.

As you can see from the above photo the bull rushes
are starting to creep too far into the pond area so these will be
reduced to stop the pond from silting over. A pond has to be manages to
stay in a form that is pleasing to both Humans and wildlife!
