Hedge and Tree Management
Over the last 10 years many lengths of hedgerows have been
rejuvenated, either by laying, coppicing and gap filling.

Hedge laying involves the removal of the side growth of
the hedge and then selection of the centre growth to pick the best
upright for laying. By the time the hedge is layered over 90% of
the growth is removed but the finished product is possible to be
livestock proof and is really sought after by small nesting birds which
love the very close nature of the re-growth of the vegetation the
following spring and summer. All the elder and weak bushes are
removed leaving only the strongest to re grow. On cutting the stem to
lay you have to cut right through the stem so only the bark and about
10-25 % at most is left in contact with the root, any more than this
then the stem will die or will not regenerate.

The above picture is the finished work.
