CROPPING
Crops grown on the farm are cereals namely wheat,
oilseed rape and potatoes, to sell
off the farm. The area of grass is grown to feed the ewes and lambs. Parts
of this arable land is used purely for
increasing the wildlife, some in 6 meter
arable margins
other in Fallow options
within the
countryside stewardship
scheme .
Arable option areas are specially sown for wild birds to feed on in
the winter, and summer ground nesting birds to nest in the summer.
The crops are grown in rotation. Wheat is followed with a break from
cereals in the form of an oilseed rape crop, potatoes or arable option fallow. For details about
their management see farm
diary.
Where grass is grown this is classed as permanent and is not ploughed out very
often. This grassland is solely around the farm buildings near the church which is the location of the old village and has not
been ploughed for at least 75 years. This is part of the stewardship scheme.
